What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which your body doesn’t properly use or make insulin, a needed hormone to breakdown glucose (sugar) in the blood.
Types of Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
- The Immune system in your body destroys pancreatic cells, which produce insulin, in which insulin must be given manually.
Type 2 Diabetes
- Typically begins with the body’s resistance to body produced insulin that progresses to diabetes.
- Generally related to middle to senior age persons, obesity, unregulated blood sugar levels and physical inactivity.
Gestational Diabetes
- A temporary condition affecting only pregnant women, usually resolving itself after childbirth.
Diagnosis
- Taking a sample of blood to measure the level of glucose/blood sugar present.
- A higher blood sugar levels than normal may indicate diabetes and a medical profession can confirm.
Treatment
- Types 1 and 2 Diabetes are chronic conditions that require medication or daily insulin shots.
- Gestational Diabetes is a temporary condition affecting only pregnant women, usually resolving itself after childbirth.
